Living near the North Georgia mountains definitely has it perks, one of the most memorable is enjoying the beautiful waterfalls. They range from roadside splashes to more challenging hikes that are rewarded with amazing natural wonders. Whatever your physical prowess, there is sure to be an option available to satisfy your thirst for adventure.
Helton Creek Falls
Located in Blairsville, GA, Helton Creek Falls tops our list. It’s not the most majestic waterfall, but it has the awesome benefit of being able to swim under the waterfall, if you can stand the cold! The trail is an easy path down, with approximately .3 mile to the observation deck. There is an upper and lower fall, with a small swimming area available at the top falls. The lower falls allows the adventure seekers to slide down the rocks, we almost found that out the hard way, ouch! Parking is limited and the drive in may stress the faint of heart, as the gravel road is quite narrow.
DeSoto Falls
Next on the list is DeSoto Falls, near Cleveland, GA. This one offers a little more of hike feel, with a 2 mile roundtrip trek, but nothing strenuous. It has two waterfalls to explore, toward the start of the trail there is an option to go left to see the lower falls (about .25 mile) and right to see the upper falls (about .75 mile). It’s a peaceful, easy walk through the woods and the upper falls has a nice observation deck for great pictures! We packed our lunch and enjoyed the shaded picnic area after our hike.
Dukes Creek Falls
If you are staying in Helen, GA you will definitely want to check out Dukes Creek Falls. Located along the Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Highway, you are treated not only with a beautiful waterfall but also gorgeous views of Yonah Mountain. Be prepared for the $4 parking permit, help keep it beautiful! The start of the hike is actually a paved trail, which allows wheelchair access to a viewing platform about .1 mile down. From there the hike descends with steps and trails for another 1 mile down to the waterfalls. You also have the ability to take a quick detour to get up close and personal with Davis Creek. The hike down is easy, the hike back up a little more challenging, but definitely doable for all ages.
Amicolola Falls
The southernmost point of the Appalachian Trail, offers one of Georgia’s tallest waterfalls, Amicolola Falls. In total, the waterfall cascades 720 feet, but your views will vary depending on where you are. There are several different hiking options, you can park in the middle with a short walk to a fantastic view. From there you can either hike down 1 mile for a view from the bottom or you can go up, up, up the 400+ stairs to the top. Spoiler, for those that don’t want to do steps, you can drive to the lodge at the top! Whatever level of activity you want, you will surely find a beautiful view.
So many more waterfalls to explore, what is your favorite? Be sure to check back again later, as we are definitely going to continue to add to our list.
